Tesla Targets 1 Million Humanoid Robots Annually
Elon Musk announced that Tesla aims to become one of the first companies to develop Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) in humanoid form, with plans to produce 1 million Optimus robots annually.
“Tesla will be one of the companies to make AGI and probably the first to make it in humanoid/atom-shaping form,” Musk said in a March 4 post on X.
The Plan
Tesla is converting its Model S/X production line at Fremont to an Optimus robot pilot line. The company targets 1 million humanoid robots annually, potentially integrating with xAI’s Grok models for intelligence.
What This Means for Jobs
If successful, humanoid robots could perform physical tasks currently done by humans in manufacturing, logistics, and even domestic settings. The timeline for widespread deployment remains uncertain, but the economic implications are significant.
For workers in physical roles, this signals a need to consider:
- Transitioning to roles requiring dexterity and adaptability robots can’t yet match
- Developing skills in robot maintenance and supervision
- Exploring careers in robot design, programming, and deployment
The Bottom Line
Musk’s timeline has historically been optimistic, but the direction is clear: physical automation is coming. Workers in repetitive physical roles should begin planning transitions now.
