Tech Layoffs Meeting
🧭 Career Digest

Four AI career stories you need to know.

Four AI career stories you need to know.

  1. 55,775 TECH WORKERS LAID OFF IN Q1 2026

Amazon led with 16,000 corporate role cuts. Microsoft, Google, Meta, and dozens of smaller companies followed. The official reason: “AI restructuring.”

Translation: We’re spending $650B on AI infrastructure and $0 on you.

What it means: The job market for tech workers is shrinking. Companies aren’t replacing laid-off workers — they’re automating.

  1. “AI RESTRUCTURING” IS THE NEW “RIGHTSIZING”

Companies used to say “rightsizing” when firing people. Now it’s “AI restructuring.” Same outcome, better PR.

The restructuring narrative: “We’re streamlining operations with AI.”

The reality: Entry-level white-collar work is being automated. Mid-level positions are being consolidated. Senior roles are staying — for now.

What it means: If your job can be done by AI, it will be. If you supervise people doing AI-replaceable work, you’re next.

  1. $650B GOING TO AI INFRASTRUCTURE, NOT SALARIES

Microsoft: $146B

Amazon: $120B

Google: $110B

Meta: $72B

Others: $202B combined

That’s $650B spent on AI. None of it is going to hiring. All of it is going to replacing the people they just laid off.

What it means: The money isn’t gone. It’s just not going to workers anymore.

  1. WHICH SKILLS SURVIVE? WHICH DON’T?

DON’T SURVIVE:

  • Data entry, analysis, visualization
  • Basic coding, debugging, testing
  • Customer service scripts
  • Report writing, summarization
  • Scheduling, coordination, logistics

MIGHT SURVIVE:

  • System architecture
  • Human relationships (sales, partnerships)
  • Creative direction (telling AI what to make)
  • Strategy and decision-making
  • Physical world work (plumbing, electrical, construction)

DOES SURVIVE:

  • Managing AI systems
  • Training AI models
  • Prompt engineering (for now)
  • Domain expertise that AI can’t replicate

What it means: The hierarchy is flipping. Entry-level knowledge work is dying. Expert-level judgment and physical-world skills are safe.

SUMMARY

55,775 tech workers lost their jobs in Q1. Companies are spending $650B on AI instead of salaries. “AI restructuring” means “we’re replacing you.”

What This Means for You: If you work in tech, you need to move up the value chain or move out of knowledge work entirely. The middle is disappearing.
